Hi again, from the shores of the Salish Sea.  Well, it is almost the anniversary of the birth of an exceptional individual, one whose influence, like that of other stellar religious figures, has endured down the millennia.

That, I believe, is what makes this a holiday which belongs to all of us.  Each of us has someone like Jesus in our life.  And we love them not because the patrician of our church so commands.

We love them because they were good people who cared for others enough to try to make a difference; and too often suffered horribly at the hands of those who preferred an ignorant population to an enlightened one.

So Christmas and the high holidays of all religions offer us a time to contemplate that exceptional human being in our lives.  I do and I go through the same cathartic experience and emotional cleansing I do when I think about other people who emulated the example of – in my particular case — Jesus but who are not here so I can thank them and give them a big hug.

To celebrate like this is also to appreciate those around us and those who, on the broader stage, are out there trying to make this planet a safer and more humane place.

Merry Christmas, gang, and have a great week.  Love Rusty

Hi Rusty:

Merry Christmas and best wishes to you and all Northstar readers who celebrate it on 25th of December. Since this year Ukraine officially joins in and has two Christmases both Catholic and Orthodox (on 7th January) joining other countries like Belarus to have double celebrations: “the countries that have two Christmases”

Personally, I totally agree with the economist headline: “So Nice, They Celebrate Twice”. While children have three months of summer vacations, to me it’s only fair for them to have almost a month at winter to let everyone relax and forget about school stresses.

Interesting where Ruslan Verin, the Ukrainian cyclist, who is now on his journey from Alaska to Mexico by bike.  He passed through seattle and it was really curious for me to see some of footage of your town, Mishka.

You have a beautiful country and it is great to observe it through the eyes of a traveler

Have wonderful holidays.  Cheersс уважением, ольга березаolha.bereza@mail.ru

Tackling destructive emotions and practicing loving-kindness isn’t something we should be doing with the next life, heaven or nirvana in mind, but how we should live in the here and now.
