AMERICA’S ARMAGEDDON MIGHT BE A CENTURY OR TWO AWAY YET
Hi again, gang, from the shores of the Salish Sea. I awoke early on Wednesday, Nov. 9, to the news of America’s new president. I was surprised but not stunned and had a mild anxiety attack that lasted about three seconds and until I remembered a few things.
First, presidential power is limited by a system of checks and balances which has worked so far in preventing chief executives from becoming potentates. They have frustrated more than one president as they will no doubt frustrate this one.
Second, I do not believe a single individual or administration can destroy America. This will be my 13th president. I have survived six Democrats and six Republicans. America is still here. So is Rusty Miller. The future I predicted in Wrath of the USS Testament has, thankfully, still not come to pass.
Third, this particular president-elect faces criminal prosecution for crimes against women and those are not going to go away. Diplomatic immunity is not a domestic prerogative. He’s going to have a lot to deal with outside the courtroom too in these regards.
The moment he fails to keep one of his outlandish promises, he’s going to lose credibility and support. As long as his opponents do not play this up but simply pursue their own agendas, erosion at this level would be at his hands and mouth and not theirs.
In the meantime, I expect the rest of us will just keep on keeping on. That’s also something Americans are pretty good at.
Have a great week, gang, and thanks for the ear.
