LET THE TEARS I SHED FOR ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL BE HAPPY ONES FOR A CHANGE

Hi again from the shores of the Salish Sea.  Okay, here’s a question for you.  Is it worth saving species? It will cost billions of dollars to save all the world’s threatened species. What’s in it for us?

I’m not the author of that, by the way.  And I find it a little insulting considering I’m one of those species.  I also object to its panoramic philosophical approach and its apocalyptic economics.

There might ultimately be global oversight but right now, saving other species is part of a general cleaning up of the mess our species has made.  It’s being done in some cases neighborhood by neighborhood and in others across tracts of nations, regions and continents.  It is being funded by a variety of sources and no single individual, class or entity ~ government or private ~ is bearing either the brunt or the glory.

Maybe it is just me but this reminds me of a certain humane society television commercial with one of my favourite singers showing several minutes of abused animals in cages.  I object to it because it seems to assume either that I do not know this goes on or that I do not care enough to contribute more.

I suggest a more positive approach and that would be like success stories.  And no before and after shots.  I want to see something like a nice lady sitting in a chair with a little dog in her lap, with cool music real soft in the background.

And as she’s stroking the dog’s hair, she’s looking at us and saying, “When we first got little Poncho here, his chances of making it were very slim.  But thanks to contributions from caring individuals like you, our little Mexican hairless is very much alive. “  Roll footage of Poncho playing with his new family and tag out with, “If you would like to make another success story like this happen, please go here.”

Show me thriving rain forests and reclaimed urban garden land.  Show me places where my money is making things grow, not just preventing them from dying.  Let the tears I shed for all creatures great and small be happy ones for a change.

Thanks for the ear, then, gang.  Have a good week.  And remember this magazine is ~ in large part ~ supported by small contributions from folks like you.  To drop a dollar in the sugar can, please go here
